Hi, people who love my all-time favorite book! And yay, people who don't think the movie is anywhere near as good...not that I blame the movie. The book is way too intricate and complex--the movie was already ridiculously long! I mean, I've read the book probably about 20 times, and there's still always something new for me...anyway, for the record, my name's Eileen, I read the book for the first time in fifth grade, I'm currently a freshman at Georgetown, and Melanie has always been my favorite character.

Fic Links
I decided that we ought to have a list of bookverse fic links on this community. All of the following fics are either clearly bookverse (as in, they refer to things that were in the book but not the film) or could be either bookverse or filmverse (as in, they refer to things that were in both and not to things that were only in the film). I consider all of them to be well-written.

As this is a short list, they aren't in any order; if people contribute links to their favorite bookverse fics, I can add them and put them in some sort of order if the list gets long enough. :) Italics mean that the note is mine and not a note from the original author.

Title: Inconvenient Truths
Author: Lorie945
Rating: G
Summary: Rhett's answer to the question: what's crazier than fighting "barefoot in the snow at Franklin?"
Pairing: Scarlett/Rhett
Note: Extended S/R flashback, involving the referenced-but-not-seen incident from the book where they go picking flowers. Lorie945 really nails the dialogue. I highly recommend this one.

Title: "'Twas a victory, yes; but it cost us dear"
Author: Maidenjedi
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Ashley Wilkes, Rhett Butler, and their war.
Note: Alternating points of view between Ashley and Rhett. The section entitled "Bonnie Blue" makes me want to cry

Title: Last Shot
Author: Roz McClure
Rating: PG
Summary: Brent and Stuart Tarleton: before, during, and after the war.

Title: Other Shoes
Author: Meltha
Rating: PG
Summary: After the war, Melanie considers the patterns of her life on a cold autumn evening in Atlanta.

Title: "Something of Grace and Beauty"
Author: amalcolm1
Rating: PG
Summary: After Rhett leaves Scarlett, he finds himself back on the road between Tara and Twelve Oaks. There he meets the one man he thought he had nothing in common with.
Note: Writing Ashley as gay is something that can be hard to pull off without going for "sensitive-man-must-be-gay" stereotypes, but this fic does it. It's about a heck of a lot more than "Ashley is gay", though. I highly recommend this one.

Title: All Honor's Wounds
Author: bonibaru
Rating: PG
Pairing: Ashley/Scarlett
Summary: "It was on a wild wet night in April that Tony Fontaine rode in from Jonesboro on a lathered horse that was half dead from exhaustion and came knocking at their door ... " Ashley's mind races as he prepares to go with Tony.

Title: Loved I Not Honor
Author: mayhap
Rating: G
Summary: Missing scene. Rhett meets Melanie for the first time after she and Ashley return to Atlanta.
Note: Excellent characterization of Melanie. I highly recommend this one.

Title: A Brazen Combination
Author: gypsymuse
Rating: R
Summary: Separately they could be endured, but the brazen combination of Scarlett and Rhett was too much to be borne. A fanciful take on the Butlers' reception and its aftermath.
Note: This isn't the most intellectual of comments, but this fic is really, really hot. Do you have Rhett fantasies? Read this fic. I highly recommend this one.

Title: The Next Morning
Author: gypsymuse
Rating: PG-13
Summary: What should have happened on the morning after. You know, after that night. Yes. That one.
Note: Alternate universe - if Scarlett and Rhett had spoken to each other the morning after.

Title: Five Things That Never Happened to Ashley Wilkes
Author: bonibaru
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Rhett Butler has an offer for Ashley he can't refuse. Will Ashley explore his darker side or will honor prevail?
Pairing: Rhett/Ashley
Note: Before I read this fic, I thought Rhett/Ashley was about the worst idea for a GWTW pairing ever. The stupidest, the most unrealistic, the most likely to be written for pure shock value and nothing else. This fic convinced me that although it's a hard pairing to pull off, it can be done. Unfortunately, the fic is incomplete, with only four of the five things. I highly recommend this one.

New Community!
I am not sure whether this is allowed, feel free to delete but...

Just recently I have started a new community (gwtw_references) for the discussion of (in particular) references made in Books, TV Shows, Movies etc. about GWTW. I've just started it, and I'd love it if people joined! =D

what is the deal with this mysterious kid in Charlestown that Rhett had to take care of? why didn't Mitchell ever explain that?

Here's a question. What part from the book absent from the film do you wish had made it in?

Does anyone else think Wade is just an adorable little boy? I want to adopt him or something. He's just so vulnerable and sweet.

I hope that even if Rhett and Scarlett never did get back together, Rhett still made the effort to see Wade, because Rhett is pretty much Wade's father. It would depress me to think that they never saw each other again after Scarlett and Rhett split up (provided she didn't get him back). I don't think Rhett would ever just abandon Wade, but he's so depressed after Bonnie's death that it's hard to know what he'd do, really.

Yay for Gone with the Wind the novel. I love the movie, but it doesn't compare at all to the amazingness of the book.

To start things off, what's everyone's favorite quote from the book?
